Zhang Tian: Water as the Soul, Sculpting the Poetic Dwelling of a Dubai Villa with Light and Shadow

This session features Zhang Tian, a Fudan University alumnus, founder of B.Z Design, and a National Level I Lighting Designer, who will share the full process based on the Villa33 villa project in Dubai, UAE ; this project won the US IAA Muse Platinum Award and also received the Excellence Award at the Fudan Lighting Ruichuang Awards.
Design motif: Water as the soul
Dubai is located in the heart of the desert, where water resources are scarce. Water symbolizes life, flow, and abundance in local culture and serves as the core creative concept of this project. The designer drew inspiration from five types of water states: oceans, lakes, raindrops, ripples, and waterfalls, integrating the dynamic aesthetics of natural water bodies into the architecture. By using lighting to replicate four visual qualities of water—shimmering waves, cascading waterfalls, deep still flows, and misty haze—the light transforms into flowing water, creating a unique aquatic sanctuary within the arid space.
Design Concept: Beyond Light, It's About Human Experience Zhang Tian proposed that communication with overseas clients need not involve piling up complex technical parameters; it is sufficient to establish a shared understanding around the four dimensions of light and nature, interwoven light and shadow, light and atmosphere, and intelligent lighting sources .
"Light does not directly change objects, but reshapes the overall spatial atmosphere, thereby altering the relationship between people and space." In villa design, the fusion of water shadows, tree shadows, and lighting can endow the space with natural vitality.
Four Core Design Principles
1 Symbiosis of functionality and artistry Downlights, light strips, and other basic functional light sources, when used in combination with tree shadows and water features, also possess artistic expressiveness; the two need not be separated. 2 Balanced uniform lighting with strict control of the light-dark ratio The common range for spatial illuminance ratio is 1:3 to 1:5. Higher contrast ratios such as 1:5 and 1:10 create a stronger sense of light and shadow atmosphere, but the implementation risk increases accordingly; in private residential spaces, the homeowner's subjective preference is the primary evaluation criterion. 3 Maintain the order of ceiling lighting layout Disorganized luminaire positions create a depressing visual effect; lighting planning must follow spatial zoning logic rather than being tied to movable furniture; in stable layout areas such as bedrooms, point locations can be refined. 4 Whole-house smart services for comfortable living The intelligent system does not pursue complex protocols; it centers on scenario-based control, adapting to various life behaviors such as home living, entertaining guests, and leisure.
Lighting Performance: Multi-scenario Layered Lighting Implementation Solutions
Teacher Zhang Tian explains the lighting logic for all spaces using hand-drawn sketches and real-world night renderings. The team is currently also using AI to assist in rendering creation, improving output efficiency. The exclusive lighting modes for each space are as follows:
1 Living Room • Bright Mode: Uniformly washes the entire wall to create an open and spacious daily living environment; • Guest mode: Dim the surrounding environment, focus light on the central guest area, adjust color temperature to 4000K, suitable for a formal communication atmosphere. 2 Home Theater Avoids a full-black design, retaining soft light strips and decorative lighting as ambient light to prevent vision damage in dark environments; supports switching between movie and party color lighting effects. 3 Restaurant & Bar Layered dimming creates a progressive atmosphere: uniform lighting for main meals, reduced brightness at late night to create a relaxed bar vibe, complemented by ambient lighting on luminous marble countertops. 4 Children's Area 全程采用无直射间接护眼光源，大面积嵌入式发光膜模拟自然光，匹配窗外实景自然光；艺术品、手办统一自上而下重点洗光，规避高蓝光、强眩光灯具。 5 Staircase, Entryway Create a sense of symmetrical order by using matching luminaires in the same style; sensor-controlled lighting illuminates each layer uniformly at a constant speed, avoiding the safety hazard of delayed activation of viral staircase lights. The "Home" and "Away" modes gradually turn the lighting on and off, endowing travel with a sense of ritual. 6 Gym, Dressing Room Vertical wall lights in the gym reduce glare from equipment; the walk-in closet is equipped with motion-sensor layered lighting inside cabinets for easy access to clothing.
Tangible Water: Four Practical Techniques for Light and Shadow in Different Water States
Focusing on the core theme of "water", Zhang Tian breaks down the lighting implementation details for different water features, while emphasizing that underwater light strips must be securely clipped and properly waterproofed with leakage protection: 1 Shimmering Waves Horizontal light strips are installed below the water level, paired with small-angle high-intensity spotlights; when the water surface ripples, they create fragmented flickering light spots; 2 Still Water / Water Mist Reduce overall luminance and color temperature, use large flood underwater lights, refer to Aman pool low-soft light design to create a quiet and hazy atmosphere; 3 Waterfall Flow Layered arrangement of dynamic gradient colored light, with high and low beams interlaced to simulate the layers of cascading water; 4 Creative Spatial Extension Reflects water ripple light patterns onto the ceiling, spreading flowing water light across the entire surface to enhance spatial relaxation.

Prioritize well-established brands with comprehensive warranty systems to reduce long-term maintenance costs.
